Blueprints (Barney McAll)

Digital Version Available Only  1 - Unnamed

"When i first came to New York in 1992 I made a pact with myself to always document my playing and composing through recording- by hook or by crook. New York takes a lot from you and so I wanted to get some back and also be able to see where I was at musically: to capture that as a sort of musical journal.

I never had any intention of actually releasing these sketches, they were really blueprints, (apart from "Shephards Hook"
which was supposed to be part of my album"Flashbacks"). But after all these years i decided it might be interesting to hear some of my process and so, here are some new pieces never before heard - 'stepping stones' to my progress as a player and composer.

Apologies for the fact that I cannot recollect what year they were recorded." -Barney McAll

1.
SHEPHERDS HOOK (for Herbie Hancock) 07:50
COMPOSER:  Barney McAll

Barney McAll - Piano, Rhodes, Andromeda
Kurt Rosenwinkel- Guitar
Jonathan Maron- Bass
Obed Calvaire- Drums
Pedrito Martinez- Bata drums

This track was supposed to make it on to my CD "Flashbacks" but I ran out of time… so here it is, rough hewn and with utmost respect to the great Herbie Hancock.

Recorded at 58N6 Studios, Brookly, NY 2007

2.
DANCING SONG 08:14
COMPOSER:  CLARE FISCHER

I have been listening to Clare Fischer for the last 20 years. His harmonic knowledge and natural musical flow have been a huge inspiration to me. He is very unique and distinctive musician and I basically transcribed this piece just to try to understand what on God's earth it was he was doing?

Barney McAll- Piano
Jim Seeley - Trumpet
Joel Frahm- Tenor Sax
Henning Seiverts- Bass
Ian Frohman- Drums

Recorded at Sound On Sound NYC

3.
RESONANCE 07:32
COMPOSER:  Barney McAll

Barney McAll -Piano
Avishai Cohen- Bass
Vincent Herring- Soprano Sax
Josh Roseman- Trombone
Pheeroan akLaff- Drums

This piece was one of the first more 'open' compositions I ever wrote. Josh Roseman's influence on me is apparent here and his orbital spaceship gigs at the Knitting Factory 'Tap Bar' flipped a switch for me forever. Thank you Josh. Vincent Herring comes courtesy of a chess game challenge where if i won, he would do the record…. and so be it.

Recorded at Acoustic Recordings, Brooklyn, NY

4.
MINGUS LIKE 06:22
COMPOSER:  Barney McAll

Barney McAll -Piano
Avishai Cohen- Bass
Vincent Herring- Soprano Sax
Pheeroan akLaff- Drums
Josh Roseman- Trombone

With this piece, I had been listening to a lot of the great master Charles Mingus and one day I sat at the piano and tried to imagine what might come to me  if Mingus was also sitting down in a parallel world and just decided to grant me some 'soundstardust'… well... at least this fantasy brought a new tune!

Recorded at Acoustic Recordings, Brooklyn, NY

5.
FLOAT 05:22
COMPOSER:  Barney McAll

Barney McAll -Piano
Avishai Cohen- Bass
Vincent Herring- Soprano Sax
Pheeroan akLaff- Drums
Josh Roseman- Trombone

This is some typical jazz quintet writing…I don't know what i was thinking when I added synth strings? But I will justify by saying it was 'grist for the mill'. Yes I did beat Vincent Herring at chess by the way and that is very rare!

Recorded at Acoustic Recordings, Brooklyn, NY

6.
HARLEQUIN 05:56
COMPOSER:  Wayne Shorter

Barney McAll Piano/Rhodes
Joel Frahm- Soprano Sax
Johannes Weidenmueller - Bass
Ian Froman- Drums

Im not certain why I try to would recreate somethingso perfect except to study it and maybe honor it. RIP Joe Zawinul.

Recorded at Sound On Sound NYC

7.
THIRTY ONE 07:12
COMPOSER:  Barney McAll

Barney McAll -Piano
Avishai Cohen- Bass
Vincent Herring- Soprano Sax
Pheeroan akLaff- Drums
Josh Roseman- Trombone

This recording was a sketch for "Thirty One" which actually came out on"Widening Circles". I can never forgot the way Pheeroan played this track. Amazing drummer.

8.
BYE YA 04:11
COMPOSER:  Thelonius Monk

Barney McAll -Piano
Avishai Cohen- Bass
Ari Hoenig- Drums

I remember Avashai told me to "relax" during this recording and he was so right. Relaxation is so crucial to music and when I made this recording i was too young musically  to understand. "Relax" is also the only thing Gary Bartz has ever said to m e with regard to music. What a blessing.

9.
NO CULTURE 03:42
COMPOSER:  Barney McAll

Barney McAll -Piano
Avishai Cohen- Bass
Ben Monder- Guitar
Ian Frohman- Drums

Another sketch for a tune that I released on "Widening Circles". This has a key change in it which quite frankly I think I forgot when i recorded "Widening Circles". Pity really and may I also say that Ben Monder is one of the great unsung giants of improvised music.

10.
SYSTEM ERROR 07:22
COMPOSER:  Barney McAll

Joel Frahm- Tenor Sax
Barney McAll -Piano
James Muller- Guitar
Avishai Cohen- Bass
Ari Hoenig- Drums

This track came out on David Rex's collision course not long after I recorded it. Beck was also very influential here believe it or not. I know this was recorded in the 90's!

11.
TWIST OF FATE 08:17
COMPOSER:  Barney McAll

Joel Frahm- Tenor Sax
Barney McAll -Piano
James Muller- Guitar
Avishai Cohen- Bass
Ari Hoenig- Drums

This track was also recorded for Widening Circles but never made the cut. I like it but, I never really got a decent version of it.

I try to never look back.
